Topaz Quilting & Embroidery Update – 8/31/2016

Labor day and the end of summer . . .

sunset-535450_1920Attention quilters of Earth! I am your fabric overlord . . .  OPS! Wrong post. OK, can you believe how fast this summer has gone. Tomorrow we are facing the month of September & Labor Day Weekend. You know fall is coming fast when you see Burning man campers and trailers heading up Pyramid Highway (Highway 445) and downtown Sparks starts to smell of BBQ. What a summer we have had. I pray that your summer was filled with love, adventure & fun. Since our last email blast, we have had some time to work on projects, classes & new marketing ideas. We’ve also had a chance to meet some wonderful people from all over the nation and even from across the pond during the Row by Row Experience. I can’t thank everyone enough for the wonderful response & kind words about our row. I know it has been an absolute pleasure working with the Row by Row Experience National Coordinators & the State Coordinator Jennifer, who has worked so hard and has been very patient through all my questions.

Row by Row Coming To An End . . .

smtopazquiltrxr2016The Row by Row Experience pattern handout portion will be ending very soon. Actually, Tuesday, September 6th, 2016 is the last day you will be able to pickup the free patterns and kits. Sadly, if most of the shops are going to be closed on Monday, that only gives you until Saturday, September 3rd. Our shop will be one of those that will be closed Sunday & Monday for the Labor Day Holiday. In the meantime, all is not lost. If you have the patterns and kits to make your favorite blocks, you still have until October 31st, 2016 to get those quilts completed, bound and taken to one of the participating shops that still has not had a winner to claim your prize of 25 fat quarters. If you’re using a row from the shop your turning in your quilt to, you should receive an extra special prize.

Topaz Quilting & Embroidery Update – 7/15/2016

Customer Submission – We Had To Share . . .

Once in awhile, we get a juicy tidbit from a customer and it’s too good to keep to ourselves. Today, is one of those days where I just have to share a website for machine embroidery designs. So I’m sure there are many of you, like myself, who needs just one more embroidery design. Not that I’ve done anything yet with the previous 600,000 that I purchased, but these are too cute to pass up. I want to thank our customer & dear friend,Kathy Platt, who showed us a brand new website for machine embroidery. Oh My Word !  OK, if you didn’t know it, I’m a sucker for cows. I love the black & white cows or even the brown & white cows. My kitchen has been decorated with cows for over 25 years now. I always have something new coming in and finding a place to squeeze them in has been like a puzzle over the last couple of years. When I saw Smart Needle at http://smartneedle.com , I just had to breakdown and pickout some embroidery designs. I think my cart is now up to $6500.00. (I may need to weed a few out.) Seriously, there is so much on this site that I just want to have! I have linked the address above so you can head over and see for yourself…..  I’M SORRY !!! I am aiding and abetting in the delinquency of embroidery addicts!

Out With the Old….

Fabric has a shelf life. Some may not think so, but the truth is, fabric gets old,
faded and can start to deteriorate. We all have that private stash that took hours and money to build. On more than one occasion, I have finally figured out what I want to do with that fabric, only to pull it out and find it has fade lines, color distortions or worse, bug holes. We do everything we can to protect it and keep it like new, but we’re not always successful. Here at Topaz Quilting & Embroidery, we hate to see fabrics hanging around our shop. It takes up room that we could use for new fabrics that we can offer to you. It also makes the store look “OLD”. Having the same thing on the shelves year after year, just doesn’t inspire quilters & embroiders with new ideas. We’re asking for your help.
We’ve already had a couple of groups come in and pick through the old and obsolete fabrics in our store.  The Newcomers group has stopped by, picking fabric for the dog beds. We’ve had the Childhood Leukemia Quilt group from Las Vegas come by and pick up some of the fabrics to make quilts for the kids. However, we still have some left. It is in one yard cuts & fat quarters, but if you can use it in projects to be used to help out our local community, we’d love to have you swing by and pick up what we have as a donation. First come, first served and while supplies last. Call us before you come by to make sure we still have fabric to offer. We just want to find a good home and a wonderful group to put this fabric to good use.

We really appreciate your help!

Topaz Quilting & Embroidery Update 6/20/2016

Summer Is Here ….

tree-1076831_1920Today is the first day of Summer !! School is out and children are playing in the parks, sprinklers and chasing the ice cream man down the street with the hopes of cool summer goodies. This is also the longest day of the year. The sun has its last chance to shine in my face at 5:00am in the morning and still dog me as I go to bed tonight. It gives me a chance to reflect on my life though. I have seen 5 decades of summers now, and each one has been the best one to date. The first couple of decades have been mostly fun and freedom. Playing with my friends and swimming at the local pool. I even remember my green hair from the chlorine in the pool. The last couple decades have been the call to vacation, weekend fun at the beach and enjoying the sunsets. This decade will bring even more. As I watch tonight’s sunset, I will reflect on the past couple of years, sharing time and friendship with all of you. The shop has been so much fun, and I really look forward to doing more in the coming year. I hope you all have a special thought for this First Day of Summer . . .

Row by Row

nevadaHave you ever heard of the Row by Row Experience? Have you taken part in the experience in years past? Well if you have, then you know the wonderful time you had finding all the patterns to make all the different blocks available. Nevada has quite a few shops participating in the Row by Row Experience this year. Find the list here. Planning a trip? Lookup the state you plan to visit and find participating shops and add to your block stock.smtopazquiltrxr2016

If you have never participated in the Row by Row Experience and want to know more about it, here is a little blurb:

How about this… it’s like a shop hop, but it’s not… no fees, no cards to stamp, and all summer to play! Simply visit any of the participating shops and receive a free pattern for a row in a quilt. Combine your rows in any way to create a unique quilt that represents the fun you had traveling throughout the summer. Travel with friends, discover new quilt shops and have fun collecting rows!”

“Create a quilt using at least 8 different 2016 rows from 8 different 2016 participating RxR shops and be the first to bring it into a participating shop to win a stack of 25 fat quarters (6-1/4 yards of fabric!). Use that shop’s row in your quilt and win a bonus prize!”

The event starts June 21st, 2016. You can pick up your patterns at participating shops from June 21st to September 6, 2016. You then have until October 31, 2016 to make your quilt and submit it for prizes.

The summer months find families taking off for vacations, traveling with the children while they are off from school. Topaz Quilting & Embroidery Update – 4/04/2016

Spring’s Blossoms . . .

garden-1176406_1920Spring has begun to show its shy blooms. I have been starting my garden with this year’s variety of vegetables and beautiful flowers. Right now, it’s more like playing in the dirt as I prepare the soil to hold, protect and nurture the fragile plants I will be placing in its care. The snow has melted away and the sun has been warming up the earth. As I work on the yard and make it ready to bloom and produce life, I find myself drifting to thoughts of projects and ideas of embroidery designs I’d really enjoy doing this year. Like the ground, my imagination is preparing to bring forth wonderful and beautiful projects for this years season. What is growing in your imagination? ? ?

Floriani’s Total Control-U Classes

Total Control-U has a very powerful tool that we are going to take a peek at. The tool will allow us to break up a large design and use smaller hoops to stitch it out. We will also learn how to create a super large hoop size for a design series and then break it apart for easy stitching. It is time to make every design size fit your hoop! Three class times are being offered. Wednesday, April 20, 2016 from 1:00pm – 3:00pm or from 4:00pm – 6:00pm. Then there is Saturday, April 23, 2016 from 11:00am – 1:00pm.

Cost is $15.00

Registration and full class information can be found HERE.

Nonrefundable fee if you miss class. Space is limited.

We have brought in some wonderful Tuscon fabrics in a variety of colors for this class.

Embroidery Ground Zero – Fabrics

fbc00153aOur series Embroidery Ground Zero will be reviewing Fabrics. We have always been told that you can stitch on several types of fabric, but it has never been explained why only those and not on others. Sometimes, we don’t even know what we can stitch on besides the basic dish towels, sweatshirts, jackets, skirts and pillow cases. Find out something new and leave thinking, “I didn’t know I could stitch on that!!” Class will be Saturday, April 30, 2016 from 10:00 am – 1:00 pm

Cost is $15.00

Registration and full class information can be found HERE.

Floriani’s My Decorative Quilter II Classes

My Decorative Quilter II classes have started up. We have had the chance to review the program in general and have started on our way to making wonderful projects. This month’s class will cover the ability of the software to take a quilt block we’ve already put together and design a cute and creative way to quilt it in the hoop to finish it. We will be using the background tool to import an image of our block and using the stitch tools, design the quilting pattern we want. Classes are April 13th, 2016. There are two classes this day. Choose from either 1:00pm to 3:00pm or from 4:00pm to 6:00pm. There is one more class you can choose and that one is on Saturday, April 23, 2016 from 2:00pm – 4:00pm.
